This research project aims to explore if implementing relational approaches and structured instructional strategies affects students’ engagement in the Visual Art classroom. This study is situated within the field of art and design at second level and explores how an effective pedagogy enhances student learning and engagement. Student’s engagement is crucial to an effective learning environment and is affected by factors such as, teacher-student relationships, the teacher’s role in designing and implementing effective instructional strategies, and student-student relationships.
The aims of the study focused on students’ experiences and perceptions of the implementation of a relational practice and structured instructional strategies, and how these interventions impacted students’ engagement. The theorists whose work was essential to this study are Nel Noddings, Stephen D. Brookfield and Robert C. Pianta.
This research project adopted an action research methodology to gather data throughout this study. A variety of research methods were used to collect data, including, questionnaires, a teacher research journal, and observations. The main findings were that implementing relational practices and structured instructional strategies in the Visual Art classroom helped create an effective learning environment that improved students’ engagement.
